The United Nations has warned that a rapidly intensifying El Niño climate phenomenon is expected to reach a high-intensity phase between July and September, increasing the likelihood of extreme weather events worldwide.
In its first seasonal emergency advisory, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said conditions are developing towards a “high-intensity El Niño episode” during the coming months.
El Niño expected to strengthen
The agency said the phenomenon is forecast to reach the third of four intensity levels on its scale between July and September.
El Niño events typically involve abnormal warming of surface waters in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, which can disrupt global weather patterns.
Increased risk of extreme weather
According to the warning, the strengthening El Niño is expected to increase the probability of extreme weather events on a global scale, including heatwaves, heavy rainfall and droughts in different regions.
Climate scientists note that El Niño conditions can significantly influence seasonal weather patterns across continents, affecting agriculture, water resources and disaster risk management.
Global monitoring continues
The WMO said it will continue to closely monitor the system as it evolves over the coming weeks, as governments and agencies prepare for potential impacts linked to the developing climate pattern.
