Recent statements by Turkish Cypriot leaders have underscored differing views on the current state of efforts to restart negotiations on the Cyprus problem.
The Cyprus talks update comes as political figures on the island comment on developments involving the United Nations and ongoing diplomatic contacts.
Erhürman: No concrete plan yet
Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman said there is currently no specific plan on the table, only ideas under discussion.
In a social media post, he noted that he had previously predicted increased activity on the Cyprus issue following elections and the end of Cyprus’s EU Council Presidency.
He expressed support for the efforts of UN Secretary-General António Guterres and said Turkish Cypriots should not be used as instruments of provocation or political narratives.
Erhürman also stressed that there is “no reason for panic”, adding that all relevant groups are being kept informed.
Tatar criticises UN envoy statement
Former Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar expressed surprise at recent remarks attributed to the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín.
He argued that the envoy’s role is not to propose new solutions but to assess whether common ground exists between the sides and report back to the UN Secretary-General.
Tatar reiterated his position in favour of a two-state solution based on sovereign equality, which he said is fully supported by Turkey.
Claims of regional and security-related concerns
Separately, the so-called parliamentary speaker Ziya Öztürkler referred to alleged developments involving Greek Cypriot positions on territorial and security issues in the context of NATO.
He stated that there is “not a single inch of land to be given away”, reflecting continued hardline positions on the Cyprus issue.
Ongoing diplomatic uncertainty
The latest Cyprus talks update reflects continued disagreement between the two sides, with no agreed framework for a formal resumption of negotiations.
United Nations-led efforts continue, but officials on both sides maintain sharply contrasting positions on the way forward.
