New technology to target distracted driving
The use of mobile phones while driving remains one of the leading causes of serious road collisions in Cyprus, with Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades warning that distracted driving is a factor in many serious and fatal crashes.
Speaking to state radio, Vafeades said some motorists are even watching TikTok videos while behind the wheel, putting both themselves and other road users at significant risk.
Permanent AI cameras planned
As part of efforts to improve road safety, the Ministry of Transport is moving ahead with the installation of new fixed traffic cameras equipped with artificial intelligence to detect drivers using mobile phones while driving.
Vafeades explained that the new cameras will be permanently installed, unlike the current mobile camera systems, allowing for more effective monitoring and targeted enforcement of dangerous driving offences.
Mobile cameras to focus on urban areas
The minister also announced changes to the operation of mobile traffic cameras.
According to Vafeades, they will primarily be deployed on urban roads, where the majority of serious and fatal traffic collisions occur.
He added that police patrols on motorways will continue as normal and will not be replaced by the new AI technology. Instead, the systems will operate alongside existing enforcement measures.
