Authorities seize another 20kg of dried poppy pods

Targeted operations by the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN) across Cyprus led to the seizure of more than 20kg of dried poppy pods and the arrest of five suspects, as authorities continue efforts to combat drug trafficking.

The operations took place on Wednesday in the districts of Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca as part of ongoing actions to detect and confiscate narcotics entering or attempting to enter the Republic of Cyprus.

More than 20kg seized

During the operations, officers discovered and seized approximately 20kg and 780g of dried poppy pods from the species Papaver somniferum.

Authorities said five men aged 20, 22, 23, 27 and 28 were arrested in connection with the case.

Police also noted that the 22-year-old suspect was already in custody in relation to another similar case.

Illegal residence status identified

Further investigations revealed that two of the suspects, aged 27 and 28, had been residing illegally in the Republic of Cyprus.

Authorities stated that investigations into the case remain ongoing.

More than 52kg seized so far

Police said that operations targeting dried poppy pods have so far resulted in the seizure of more than 52kg of the substance and the arrest of nine individuals.

Five suspects remain in custody, while four others are expected to appear before court today.

The Drug Law Enforcement Unit said operational activity and targeted actions against the importation, trafficking and distribution of narcotic substances will continue across Cyprus with undiminished intensity.
