Occupied areas: Israeli man released in embryos case after US intervention

Date:

A case involving a young American citizen reportedly held for weeks in the occupied areas of Cyprus has concluded following his release, according to statements made by a US official.

US official announces release

The announcement was made by the US Ambassador and Special Envoy for Monitoring and Combating Antisemitism, Rabbi Yehuda Kaploun, in comments to the US media outlet Belaaz.

He stated that the young man, originally from Ohio, had travelled to Turkey and then to the occupied areas of Cyprus to assist a fertility-related organisation in the transfer of embryos as part of what was described as a charitable mission.

Allegations and detention

Kaploun claimed the US citizen had not violated any laws, but said the organisation involved had failed to properly complete required documentation.

When the young man attempted to leave Cyprus by air, he was reportedly accused of criminal offences and taken into custody.

He added that the case involved conditions that amounted to “human rights violations”, although no further details were provided regarding the detention facility or duration.

Diplomatic intervention

According to the US official, the case prompted intervention from his office, the US State Department, the American embassy, and an Israeli lawyer, resulting in the man’s release.

“We worked to have him moved to better detention conditions and he has now been released and is returning home,” he said.

Kaploun described the incident as a “misunderstanding”, stressing that coordinated diplomatic and legal efforts led to the outcome.

He also clarified that the case was not treated as a hostage situation but as the detention of a US citizen abroad, which falls under the remit of a specialised State Department service.

No official statement

No official statement has yet been issued by Cypriot authorities regarding the allegations, the conditions of detention, or the circumstances that led to the arrest.
