Four embryos found in luggage of 24-year-old in occupied areas

Date:

A 24-year-old suspect has been placed under a two-day detention order after being arrested at Tymbou (Ercan) airport in the occupied areas, in connection with the alleged transport of four embryos in his luggage.

According to reports cited by the media outlet Kıbrıs Postası, the man was attempting to travel abroad when authorities discovered the embryos during a security check.

He was arrested on suspicion of violating the so-called “law on transplantation of human cells, tissues and organs.”

Embryos found in sealed containers

The incident occurred on Wednesday, with the suspect brought before the so-called Nicosia “district court” on Thursday, which issued a two-day detention order.

Court proceedings heard that the embryos were contained in four separate tubes inside a specialised container labelled “Life Pack” with a reference number.

Authorities said the embryos were reportedly taken from an IVF centre operating in occupied Nicosia without authorisation from the relevant authorities, and were seized as evidence.

Investigation ongoing

The so-called police investigator told the court that the suspect gave a voluntary statement during questioning.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the alleged embryo transfer are ongoing.
