The Government strike taking place across Cyprus today is expected to affect several essential services, with authorities warning of disruptions to beach lifeguard coverage and some public healthcare operations.
Essential services join nationwide protest
Hourly paid government employees are taking part in a nationwide 24-hour protest on Wednesday, 24 June. Staff involved serve in key positions across ministries and government departments, including the Department of Forests, Fire Service, lifeguard services, the Department of Road Transport, Civil Defence, Public Works and the Water Development Department.
According to the Ministry of Interior, the industrial action is expected to affect lifeguard coverage at beaches across Cyprus as well as public healthcare facilities.
As a result, members of the public are urged to exercise increased caution while swimming or taking part in sea-related activities at beaches where lifeguard services may be unavailable.
Public hospitals operating with safety staff
The State Health Services Organisation (SHSO/OKYPY) announced that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure the continued operation of public hospitals and health centres during the 24-hour strike action.
Throughout the mobilisation, public hospitals will operate with safety personnel in place, with priority given to patient safety and the uninterrupted handling of emergency cases.
Specifically:
• Accident and Emergency Departments will operate normally.
• Care for hospitalised patients will continue without disruption.
• Delays or rescheduling may occur for certain appointments, examinations, non-urgent services and scheduled surgeries.
• Patients who may be affected will be informed in advance by the relevant departments.
Authorities aim to minimise disruption
OKYPY stated that every effort is being made to minimise inconvenience to the public while maintaining safe, high-quality and continuous healthcare services.
The organisation stressed that patient safety and the smooth operation of public hospitals and health centres remain its highest priority.
