Phaedonos in court – Responds to charges in rape case

Date:

The trial involving suspended Paphos Mayor Phedonas Phedonos returns before the Permanent Criminal Court of Paphos today, as proceedings continue in a case where he faces rape and other criminal charges.

New court composition

During today’s proceedings, the Criminal Court is expected to convene with a new composition following the exclusion of Judge Nikodemos Fakontis from the previous panel.

From a legal and procedural standpoint, charges are expected to be formally read to Mr Phedonos, who will be asked whether he admits or denies the allegations.

Closed-door request possible

However, a request by the Prosecution for the hearing to take place behind closed doors cannot be ruled out. Such a request could be based on relevant case law and the need to protect the alleged victim.

It is noted that at the District Court of Paphos, before the accused was referred directly for trial before the Criminal Court, the Prosecution had submitted a similar request, citing the need to safeguard the privacy of the alleged victim.

The request was reportedly based on provisions of relevant legislation as well as legal frameworks concerning the protection of victims and witnesses, particularly in cases involving violence against women. It was also highlighted that rape offences fall within this category and require enhanced protective measures.

Defence expected to object

Lawyers representing the suspended Paphos Mayor, Christos Pourgourides and Epameinondas Korakidis, are expected to object to any request for the proceedings to be conducted behind closed doors, as they had previously indicated during the referral hearing.

According to the indictment, the suspended mayor faces four charges relating to rape, indecent assault, administering an intoxicating substance with intent to commit a felony or misdemeanour, and assault causing actual bodily harm.

The case was investigated by a special investigative team of Police Headquarters following a complaint submitted by a businessman and the alleged victim.
