A football camp took place in the occupied area of Agios Amvrosios, bringing together professional and semi-professional footballers currently active in England.
According to Turkish Cypriot media reports and posts on X, the football camp “MET Camp 26 Northern Cyprus” was organised by MET Sports, with sponsorship from Evergreen Developments Group, at the Erdal Barut Stadium.
The camp focused on pre-season preparation ahead of the 2026–2027 football season.
Players linked to English clubs participated
Organisers said participants included footballers associated with clubs such as Chelsea, West Ham United, Queens Park Rangers and Coventry City.
The players reportedly included both newly signed professionals and semi-professional athletes, all undergoing intensive physical and technical training as part of their preparation programme.
Aim to expand international sports programme
MET Sports director Tozun Erciyias described the camp as successful, noting increased interest for future editions and plans to expand international training camps and tournaments.
He added that the organisation aims to further develop its sports programmes and potentially include Turkish Cypriot footballers in future editions.
Focus on player development
Programme coordinator Bülent Şener said the main goal of the camp was to help players prepare effectively for the new season.
He noted that participants came from different age groups and competitive levels, ranging from academy players to established professionals.
Plans for future camps
Former professional footballer and MET Sports founder Olu Durojainde said the initiative was designed to support young players in England as they prepare for competitive seasons and potential career progression.
He added that some participants are close to breaking into first teams, while others are seeking new professional contracts.
Political sensitivities surrounding event
The organisation of sporting events in the occupied north of Cyprus continues to draw attention, with concerns raised over the international visibility and political implications of such activities.
While players are not officially representing their clubs, references to major English teams have contributed to increased visibility for the event.
