Larnaca saves €530,000 through renewable energy

Date:

Solar investment delivers major savings

The Larnaca District Local Government Organisation (EOA Larnaca) has saved more than €530,000 through investments in renewable energy, while pressing ahead with multi-million-euro infrastructure projects across the district.

EOA Larnaca President Angelos Hadjicharalambous told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that the organisation’s strategy on renewable energy and sustainable development has significantly reduced electricity costs since operations began in July 2024.

The organisation currently operates photovoltaic systems with a combined installed capacity of 855kW across various facilities, including wastewater and stormwater pumping stations, administrative offices, green points and the Larnaca Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Energy production cuts electricity costs

According to Hadjicharalambous, the organisation generated 955,554kWh of electricity from its solar installations during 2025, resulting in savings of approximately €283,000.

During the first four months of 2026 alone, solar production reached 335,572kWh, generating savings of more than €100,000.

Overall, photovoltaic investments have delivered savings exceeding €530,000 since July 2024, while renewable energy has covered 19.2% of the organisation’s energy needs over the same period.

Water network and smart meter upgrades

Meanwhile, EOA Larnaca is preparing to begin a €3 million project to replace sections of the water supply network in Larnaca and Oroklini.

The upgrade aims to reduce water losses and tackle the issue of non-revenue water by replacing ageing infrastructure.

Installation of 25,000 smart water meters is also expected to be completed by the end of the month. The devices will allow both consumers and the organisation to monitor water consumption, helping to identify leaks and reduce unnecessary water use.

Residents will also have access to an online platform enabling them to track their household water usage. The project is valued at around €5 million, with plans to eventually extend smart meter coverage to all EOA Larnaca consumers.

Green Point and sewerage projects progress

The new Green Point facility in the Piale Pasha area of Larnaca is expected to be completed and handed over during July. The project has cost around €1 million.

Hadjicharalambous also said the tender for the fourth phase of the district’s sewerage network is expected to be awarded within the next one to two months. The next phase will cover Aradippou, Livadia, Oroklini and Pyla.
