Demis Hassabis, the Greek Cypriot scientist behind DeepMind and AlphaFold, has been promoted by Google to the position of president and chief scientist of the company’s artificial intelligence division.
The move highlights Google’s growing focus on AI competition and its hopes of relying on the expertise of the man behind one of the biggest breakthroughs in modern technology.
Hassabis, who was born in London in 1976, began his career as a chess prodigy and video game programmer before moving into neuroscience and artificial intelligence.
DeepMind and the AlphaFold breakthrough
At the age of 17, Hassabis created Theme Park, a globally successful video game, before studying neuroscience at the University of Cambridge and researching the relationship between memory and imagination.
In 2010, he founded DeepMind with the ambition of solving what he described as the “mystery of intelligence” and applying that knowledge across science and technology.
The company gained international attention with AlphaGo, an artificial intelligence system that defeated one of the world’s top Go players, before achieving another major breakthrough with AlphaFold.
Nobel Prize recognition
In 2024, Demis Hassabis received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry alongside his colleague John Jumper for AlphaFold2, an AI model capable of predicting the structure of around 200 million proteins.
The technology is now used by more than two million scientists in 190 countries, with applications ranging from pharmaceutical research to environmental projects such as plastic waste breakdown.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences described the ability to predict protein structures as a major benefit for humanity.
Cypriot roots and family background
Despite his global career, Hassabis has maintained close ties with his family in North London, where his parents and siblings live.
His father, a Greek Cypriot from Famagusta, moved to Britain after the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus. His sister has also achieved recognition as a pianist and composer.
Billion-dollar fortune and new challenge
Hassabis’ personal wealth is estimated at between $500 million and $3 billion, following Google’s 2014 acquisition of DeepMind for $650 million.
Google kept him as the company’s leader after the acquisition, and he now takes responsibility for one of the technology giant’s most important areas.
As head of Google’s AI division, Demis Hassabis faces perhaps his greatest challenge yet: pushing beyond his own previous achievements.
