Larnaca launches WhatsApp alert system for severe weather and disasters

Date:

The Larnaca District Self-Government Organisation (EOA) has launched a new alert system using WhatsApp to improve early warning and coordination during extreme weather events and natural disasters.

The initiative aims to strengthen prevention and civil protection mechanisms by ensuring immediate communication between local authorities across the district.

Strengthening disaster preparedness

The new system complements an existing network of 25 meteorological stations developed by EOA Larnaca in cooperation with KITASWEATHER, which provides real-time forecasting and monitoring data across the district.

Through a dedicated WhatsApp group, municipalities and communities in Larnaca will receive immediate alerts regarding severe or extreme weather conditions, including precise geographic information on affected areas.

The system will also be used in cases of natural disasters such as wildfires that may threaten mountainous communities, enabling faster response and coordinated action from relevant authorities.

Faster communication for crisis response

Authorities said the use of a widely used application such as WhatsApp will significantly improve the speed of critical information sharing and enhance coordination between agencies.

They stressed that timely information is essential for effective risk management and the protection of human life and property.

Public access to real-time data

Residents already have access to a dedicated meteorological platform operated by EOA Larnaca, which provides real-time data on rainfall, humidity, temperature and wind intensity.

The platform also issues early warnings for severe weather events and is available at:

The combined use of meteorological stations, the online platform and the new WhatsApp alerts system forms an integrated early warning and risk management framework for the district.

Authorities said this development strengthens operational readiness and ensures faster, more reliable information flow to both citizens and local authorities.

The alert system in Larnaca marks another step towards improved safety, coordination and preparedness in the region.
