Zelensky proposes meeting with Putin in US

Date:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has proposed a Ukraine-Russia meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the United States, following a phone call with US President Donald Trump.

Proposal discussed with Trump

In a video message posted on X, Zelensky said the idea was raised during his conversation with Trump on Sunday.

“We discussed with President Trump the possibility of holding such a meeting in the US, in a format that would make it very difficult for Putin to refuse, at least to President Trump,” Zelensky said.

He added that the outcome remains uncertain, but warned that if Russia rejects the opportunity, further pressure would be necessary.

Push for direct talks with Putin

Zelensky has previously expressed willingness to meet Putin directly, though no such meeting has taken place so far.

The Ukrainian president continues to advocate for high-level talks aimed at ending the war, while seeking stronger international involvement in facilitating negotiations.

Kremlin stance remains unchanged

The Kremlin has previously indicated that any Ukraine-Russia meeting could only take place in Moscow, a condition Ukraine has rejected.

Zelensky has insisted that such a location would not be acceptable, keeping the two sides at an impasse over the format and setting of any potential переговорs.

Diplomatic pressure continues

The proposal comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts involving the United States and its allies to explore pathways toward negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow.

Zelensky stressed that if Russia refuses engagement, additional international pressure should follow.
