The Municipality of Nicosia hosted the event “Nicosia and the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union” on 9 June 2026, unveiling Cyprus’ first-ever large-scale 3D Projection Mapping spectacle on the historic Venetian Walls at Eleftheria Square.

The light show showcased the capital’s history, culture and European identity through cutting-edge digital technology, highlighting the city’s role during Cyprus’ Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

A visual journey through Nicosia’s past

Using advanced 3D Projection Mapping technology, the semi-circular section of the Venetian Walls at the Davila Bastion was transformed into a living canvas of light, images and storytelling.

Visitors experienced a 17-minute immersive audiovisual presentation featuring key moments in Nicosia’s history and illustrating the city’s enduring connection to Europe. The production combined technology, art and culture, offering a modern interpretation of the capital’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

Nicosia at the heart of Europe

Addressing the event, Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou highlighted the pivotal role played by Nicosia during Cyprus’ EU Council Presidency.

He noted that the capital hosted major summits, meetings and high-level events over recent months, welcoming European leaders, ministers, officials and experts involved in shaping policies and decisions affecting Europe’s future.

Message of unity and shared responsibility

Mayor of Nicosia Charalambos Prountzos stressed that European unity is not guaranteed but requires continuous effort, cooperation and shared responsibility.

He reaffirmed Nicosia’s commitment to the vision of a united, democratic, sustainable and inclusive Europe, while highlighting the significance of Cyprus’ Presidency in drawing attention to the reality of Nicosia as Europe’s last divided capital.

According to speakers at the event, thousands of visitors, including heads of state, diplomats and representatives of European institutions, had the opportunity to witness first-hand the consequences of the city’s division.

Free summer screenings announced

The Municipality of Nicosia announced that the projections will continue throughout the summer season.

The film will be screened free of charge every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 21:00 to 22:00 on the semi-circular section of the Venetian Walls at the Davila Bastion, located at the bridge of Eleftheria Square.

Residents and visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the light show while exploring the capital’s history, culture and European journey through an innovative visual experience.
