US House approves $70bn for immigration enforcement operations

Date:

The US House of Representatives has approved a major budget bill allocating nearly $70 billion for immigration enforcement operations, strengthening the Trump administration’s mass deportation policy.

The US immigration funding package is now set to be signed by President Donald Trump after already passing the Senate last week.

Bill allocates billions to ICE and CBP

The legislation provides around $38 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and approximately $26 billion for Customs and Border Protection (CBP), along with an additional $5 billion for emergency and unforeseen expenses.

The US immigration funding measure ensures continued financing for large-scale deportation operations, which the administration has made a central political priority.

Pressure to expand deportation operations

Officials say the funding supports efforts to accelerate deportations, with enforcement expected to intensify in major cities such as New York.

The policy has faced political pressure from hardline supporters who argue that deportation targets have not been met.

Political divide in Congress

Republicans welcomed the bill’s passage, with House Speaker Mike Johnson stating that Democrats would not be able to block ICE and CBP funding in the coming years.

Democrats strongly opposed the measure, arguing that US immigration funding should instead be directed toward reducing living costs and implementing immigration enforcement reforms.

Controversy over enforcement practices

The bill follows months of political dispute over ICE and CBP operations, including demands for increased oversight and reforms such as body-worn cameras for agents.

Opposition lawmakers also criticised the lack of reform provisions in the final legislation.

Broader political tensions

The debate comes amid ongoing disputes over immigration enforcement strategy and federal spending priorities.

Critics argue the funding represents unchecked expansion of enforcement agencies, while supporters say it is necessary to secure US borders and enforce immigration laws.
