Car thieves target baptism envelopes at Cape Greco

Date:

What began as an unusual story with a touch of humour ended in a costly experience for several members of the public, after money was reportedly stolen from locked vehicles following a baptism ceremony near Cape Greco.

According to a complaint, the incident occurred after a baptism at the Church of Saints Anargyroi. As guests returned to their vehicles after the ceremony, they noticed that their remote car keys were not functioning properly, requiring repeated attempts to lock or unlock their vehicles.

At first, many assumed the issue was caused by weak key fob batteries.

However, during the reception that followed, guests learned that money contained in an envelope intended for the baptism had been stolen from another vehicle.

The information prompted other attendees to check their belongings. According to the complaint, they soon discovered that their own envelope, which had been left inside a vehicle, had also been stolen.

The vehicle owners claim their cars had been locked and showed no visible signs of forced entry, raising questions about the method allegedly used by the perpetrators to gain access and relock the vehicles without being detected.

The incident was officially reported to the Cyprus Police, and those affected say the purpose of publicising the case is not only to report the theft but also to warn others.

“We are sharing this so people are aware and can be more careful,” the post stated.

The case has already sparked discussion on social media regarding vehicle security at large public gatherings.
