Ukraine apologises over drone found off Lefkada: “We regret the incident”

Date:

Ukraine has expressed regret over the incident involving a maritime drone that was discovered near the Greek island of Lefkada, with Kyiv attributing the event to conditions created by Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine.

In a statement posted on social media, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi thanked Greece and the Greek people for their consistent support since the early days of Russia’s full-scale invasion and stressed the importance Ukraine places on its friendly relations with Greece.

“Regarding the incident involving the maritime drone that was located near the Greek island of Lefkada, the Ukrainian side expresses its gratitude to Greece and the Greek people for their steadfast support for our country from the very first days of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Ukraine highly values its friendly relations with Greece,” the statement said.

Tykhyi noted that modern challenges to international and regional security, particularly maritime security, as well as the activities of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” are matters of common concern for both Greece and Ukraine.

He emphasised Ukraine’s commitment to international law and the principles of civilian maritime safety, while expressing a desire to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“In this context, the Ukrainian side expresses its regret over the incident, stressing that it was the result of conditions created by Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine,” the statement added.

According to Kyiv, the incident demonstrates that Russia’s continued military actions pose a threat not only to Ukraine but also to neighbouring friendly states, Europe, and the wider international community.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry further reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening friendly relations with Greece and developing constructive dialogue in all areas of mutual interest.
