Chinese official reaffirms position for a just settlement of the Cyprus issue

Date:

Wang Aiwen, member of the Permanent Committee of the Central Disciplinary Control Service and Deputy Secretary of the Labor Committee of the State Organization of the Chinese Communist Party, reaffirmed on Monday his country’s principled stance “for a just and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue, based on the UN Security Council resolutions.”

Wang met with the Chair of the Parliamentary Committee of Foreign Affairs, Haris Georgiades, and its members, Marina Nicolaou and Alexandra Atttalides, accompanied by China’s Ambassador in Cyprus, Liu Yantao. Both parties underlined the excellent bilateral relations between Cyprus and China and noted the opportunities for further growth, a House press release said.

The members of the Parliament thanked China, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, for its efforts towards a settlement of the Cyprus issue and reaffirmed that Cyprus stands for “One Cyprus – One China.”

Georgiades also highlighted Cyprus’ role as a pillar of security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, noting Turkey’s destabilizing role, along with its intransigent position as regards the Cyprus issue.

Wang spoke about the significant contribution of the Strategic Partnership between China and Cyprus for the promotion of bilateral political and trade relations. He also noted the cooperation of the people of the two countries, within the chinese Belt and Road Initiative. Wang also mentioned that Cyprus has a constructive input in EU-China relations.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
