Trump: No deal needed to take enriched uranium from Iran

Date:

US President Donald Trump has said that Washington does not need a formal agreement with Iran to obtain enriched uranium from the country.

Speaking to reporters, Trump stated: “We could take it right now. I don’t think they would stop us if we wanted, but there is no reason. It is buried.”

His comments come amid ongoing international concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme and regional tensions.

Talks and diplomatic stance

Trump also said he does not want to meet Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, unless it is necessary for a deal.

“We could meet if we were going to make a deal,” he said, adding that in such a case he would show respect.

He reiterated that Iran must not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons.

Warning over potential escalation

Referring to the possibility of renewed conflict, the US President said that if Iranians were to kill American soldiers, it would be “a good reason to restart” a war.

He added that the United States would prevail “whether through military means or diplomacy.”

Hormuz Strait and regional tensions

When asked about potential terms of any agreement, Trump said: “You will see what the deal is,” adding that a key element would be the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

He did not provide further details on possible negotiations.

Comments on Lebanon and Israel

Turning to Lebanon, Trump said he believes progress is being made between Israel and Lebanon, adding that Beirut “deserves peace.”

He also claimed he had spoken with Hezbollah on the matter and suggested developments could take place in the region.
