North Korea has launched several projectiles, including at least one short-range ballistic missile, toward waters off its western coast, according to South Korea’s military.
The South Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff said the launches took place around 1 p.m. local time from an area near Chongju in North Pyongan province.
Missile flew around 80 kilometres
According to the military, the ballistic missile travelled approximately 80 kilometres before landing in the sea.
The launches mark the first known missile activity by North Korea since 19 April, when it carried out short-range ballistic missile tests reportedly equipped with cluster munitions.
Continued weapons development
Earlier in April, Pyongyang said it had tested a new ballistic warhead with cluster capabilities, as well as an electromagnetic weapon system.
Analysts say these developments reflect North Korea’s ongoing efforts to demonstrate advanced battlefield capabilities and modern warfare systems.
Calls for de-escalation from Seoul
The South Korea Foreign Ministry urged Pyongyang to respond to peace initiatives and efforts to reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
Seoul reaffirmed its commitment to the goal of complete denuclearisation, while continuing a gradual and pragmatic approach in coordination with the international community.
The latest launches come amid continued tensions on the Korean Peninsula, where missile tests have become a recurring source of regional concern.
