Coordination with UN to strengthen fire protection in Buffer Zone

Date:

Cypriot authorities have placed all relevant services on full operational readiness ahead of the start of the fire season, while also strengthening cooperation with the United Nations to improve response to potential wildfires within the Buffer Zone.

According to the Department of Forests, two key meetings were held with UN representatives to review existing procedures and enhance coordination in case of fire incidents in the sensitive area.

Focus on Buffer Zone coordination

The discussions centred on improving operational cooperation and ensuring a faster, more effective response mechanism in the event of wildfires in the Buffer Zone.

Officials also carried out on-site visits and inspections at entry points to the Buffer Zone to assess operational readiness and the ability to ensure immediate access during emergencies.

Joint inspections and planning

Representatives from the Department of Forests and the Fire Service participated in the meetings and field inspections, as part of ongoing inter-agency coordination.

The efforts form part of a wider strategy to improve preparedness and response capabilities ahead of the high-risk summer fire period in Cyprus.
