Car flips into house yard after wild crash in Limassol

Date:

A 19-year-old driver was injured after a dramatic crash in Limassol late on Thursday night when he allegedly failed to stop for police and drove against traffic before overturning his vehicle.

According to police, officers on patrol on the Limassol-Nicosia motorway near the Germasogeia roundabout signalled the driver to stop for inspection after spotting him allegedly using a mobile phone while driving.

The driver reportedly ignored police instructions and continued his journey. Upon reaching the next roundabout, he drove against the flow of traffic.

Vehicle struck sign and house fence

Police said the driver later lost control of the vehicle at another roundabout. The car mounted the roundabout, struck a metal road sign, continued over the pavement and eventually crashed into the fence of a house before overturning onto its side.

Members of the Fire Service assisted in freeing the 19-year-old driver from the wreckage.

A 17-year-old passenger was also inside the vehicle at the time of the collision.

Driver tests positive for drugs

Both individuals were taken by ambulance to the hospital. The 17-year-old received first aid treatment and was discharged, while the 19-year-old remained hospitalised. His condition is reported to be out of danger.

Police said the 19-year-old tested positive during a preliminary drug driving test.

The Limassol Traffic Department is investigating offences including reckless and dangerous driving, failure to comply with police instructions, driving under the influence of drugs and causing a road collision.
