Soldier intubated with meningitis – Two others monitored

Date:

A meningitis case has placed a soldier of the Hellenic Force in Cyprus (ELDYK) in intensive care at the Nicosia General Hospital after he contracted the disease, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

Speaking to SigmaLive, Defence Ministry spokesperson Christos Pieris said the soldier remains intubated but his condition is stable. If his recovery continues positively, doctors are expected to attempt extubation on Thursday.

Two more soldiers under observation

Pieris also confirmed that two other soldiers are currently under medical observation at the hospital following the incident.

He stressed that authorities have already carried out all necessary measures in coordination with the Centre for Infections.

Preventive measures implemented

According to the Defence Ministry spokesperson, crews disinfected affected areas using special solutions, while officials also replaced bedding in relevant facilities.

Close contacts of the infected soldier will be required to wear masks for the next three days as a precautionary measure.

Authorities have also administered preventive medication to those affected.
