Police investigate online fraud case
A GESY scam case is under investigation after €48,000 was stolen through fraudulent messages impersonating the General Healthcare System (GESY).
According to Police, a complaint was filed with the Paphos CID by a 60-year-old man who received a suspicious SMS on 28 April 2026.
Fake message led to phishing site
The message appeared to originate from GESY and claimed that the victim’s profile required an upgrade, directing him to a website. Once there, he was asked to enter personal details and bank account information, allegedly to complete a payment required for the upgrade.
After submitting the information, the perpetrators gained access to his account and withdrew €48,000.
Investigation underway by authorities
The case is being investigated by the Financial Crime Investigation Office of the Paphos CID.
Police are examining the methods used by the fraudsters, who relied on impersonation and phishing techniques.
Public warning issued
Authorities stress that the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) will never request passwords, login details, payment information or personal data via SMS.
They also emphasised that citizens will never be asked to carry out financial transactions through links sent in messages.
Advice to the public
Police urge the public to remain vigilant when receiving messages containing links and to verify any communication through official channels.
Citizens are advised not to share personal or banking details on unknown websites.
Anyone who has already disclosed such information should immediately contact their bank to prevent unauthorised use.
