Arrests at Larnaca airport for untaxed cigarettes

Date:

An arrest took place on Sunday after two individuals were detained at Larnaca Airport over the possession of undeclared tobacco products.

The suspects were due to travel to Manchester in the United Kingdom when customs officers carried out an inspection based on prior intelligence.

During the operation, officers from the Customs Department searched the luggage of two Bulgarian nationals.

Authorities found 127 cartons of 200 cigarettes each in the first passenger’s luggage, and 119 cartons of 200 cigarettes each in the second.

The tobacco products did not carry the required health warnings in Greek and Turkish, indicating they were not properly declared or taxed.

Following the discovery, both individuals were arrested for flagrant offences as part of the case.

The seized tobacco products were confiscated by customs authorities as part of the ongoing investigation.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Larnaca District Court, where authorities will request detention orders.

The case remains under investigation, with officials continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the attempted transport of the undeclared goods.
