Protest in Larnaca today for port and marina development

Date:

Mobilisation over long-delayed project

A mobilisation over the future of the development of Larnaca port is taking place today at 6pm in Larnaca, Cyprus, in the area between the roundabout and the entrance to the port on Mele Nikaolaidi Street.

The Larnaca port development has become a focal point of local concern, with authorities and stakeholders calling for immediate progress on long-delayed plans for the port, marina and surrounding land.

Local leaders demand clear roadmap

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Larnaca Mayor and Chair of the City and District Development Committee Andreas Vyras and President of the Larnaca District Local Government Organisation Angelos Hadjicharalambous said the mobilisation was unanimously decided during a meeting on 17 April.

They stressed that two years after the termination of the contract with Kition, there has been no substantial progress or clear plan for the Larnaca port development.

Core demands for the project

Officials said the aim of the mobilisation is to send a clear message that further delays, new studies or indefinite planning phases are no longer acceptable.

They insist that any Larnaca port development must respect the land uses already approved by the Municipal Council and the Development Committee and submitted to the Ministry of Transport in June 2023.

They also reject any proposal limiting the land area exclusively to port and marina uses, arguing that the city must retain control over the broader development vision.

Call for government action

The local authorities are also demanding that the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works deliver on its commitment to present within one to two months a preliminary master plan for the Larnaca port development.

This plan should include project costs, financing structures, potential involvement of the Cyprus Ports Authority, and clear implementation timelines.

Next steps

Officials described today’s mobilisation as the first step. They warned that if the city’s demands are not met, further reaction measures will follow.

The Larnaca port development remains one of the most significant infrastructure and urban planning issues for the city, with growing pressure for decisive government action.
