King Charles’ Congress speech to focus on transatlantic unity

Date:

King Charles is set to emphasise unity with the United States and the need to defend democratic values in his US Congress speech on Tuesday, during a state visit that unfolds against rising geopolitical tensions linked to the war in Iran.

The address comes as Washington and London face political strain over the conflict, even as both sides continue to underline the importance of their long-standing “special relationship”.

Donald Trump will attend key events during the visit, which also includes meetings with senior US officials and a state dinner at the White House.

State visit under geopolitical pressure

Queen Camilla accompanies King Charles on the four-day visit, which aims to reinforce transatlantic ties built over 250 years since US independence.

The visit takes place amid disagreement over the US-Israeli war in Iran and wider concerns about global security coordination within NATO.

In his US Congress speech, King Charles is expected to stress shared democratic principles, including peace, freedom of religion, and international cooperation.

He will also highlight the importance of unity in addressing global challenges such as conflict, security risks, and environmental protection.

The speech will avoid direct political confrontation between Washington and London, including tensions involving UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Instead, the King will focus on continuity in the relationship, emphasising defence, intelligence cooperation, and economic stability.

Wider visit programme

The royal visit continues with commemorative events in New York marking the September 11 attacks, followed by engagements in Virginia focused on environmental conservation.

The trip concludes later in Bermuda.
