Train collision in Indonesia: At least 14 dead, 81 injured

Date:

Fatal collision near Jakarta

The death toll from the Indonesia train crash near the capital Jakarta has risen to 14, according to the state railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI).

Authorities confirmed that a total of 84 people were taken to hospitals for treatment following the collision between two trains on Monday evening.

Officials said it remains unclear whether two passengers still trapped in a severely damaged carriage have survived.

A spokesperson for KAI said two people were still alive but trapped inside the mangled remains of a carriage as rescue teams continued efforts at the scene.

The incident occurred near Bekasi Timur station, around 25 kilometres east of Jakarta.

How the train crash happened

Police said a long-distance train collided with the rear carriage of a stationary commuter train, which was a women-only section.

Early reports suggest a vehicle may have been involved at a level crossing, causing the commuter train to stop on the tracks before being struck.

Rescue operations continue

Emergency crews worked through the night cutting through wreckage to reach trapped passengers. Dozens of ambulances were deployed as injured passengers were transported to hospitals.

Officials said 240 passengers on the long-distance train were unharmed.

Investigations into the cause of the train crash in Indonesia are ongoing.
