Weather pattern shifts – Rain and thunderstorms on the way

Date:

Weak low pressure affects island

Cyprus weather conditions remain unsettled as weak low pressure continues to influence the region, bringing a mix of sunshine and localised cloud development.

The day begins with increased low cloud and patches of mist or fog in some areas. However, conditions gradually improve across most parts of the island, with mainly clear skies and periods of local cloud expected.

Afternoon showers and storms likely

By midday and into the afternoon, developing cloud is expected to bring isolated showers and thunderstorms, mainly over mountainous areas, parts west and south of Troodos, and later inland regions.

Winds will initially be variable and light at around 3 Beaufort, soon turning onshore. By the afternoon, they will become mainly south-westerly to north-westerly, remaining light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort.

The sea will be generally calm to slightly rough, with temporarily slightly rough conditions in northern, southern, and western coastal areas.

Temperatures will rise to around 28°C inland, 24°C along the south-eastern, eastern, and northern coasts, 23°C in the south-western and western coastal areas, and about 17°C in higher mountainous regions.

Clear night with cooler temperatures

Tonight, Cyprus weather will be mostly clear, although increased low cloud will appear at times along the coasts.

Winds will blow mainly north-westerly to north-easterly, and south-easterly in the north-west, remaining light at around 3 Beaufort. The sea will be calm to slightly rough, though initially slightly rough in the west.

Temperatures will drop to around 18°C on western coasts, 16°C inland and along other coasts, and near 8°C in higher mountainous areas.

Similar pattern continues midweek

On Tuesday, conditions will start mostly clear with local cloud, but cloud build-up later in the day is expected to bring isolated showers and thunderstorms, mainly in mountainous areas and the eastern half of the island. Hail is possible during storms.

On Wednesday and Thursday, intervals of increased cloud will be observed, with afternoon cloud development likely to produce isolated showers or thunderstorms, especially in mountainous and inland areas.

Temperatures are not expected to change significantly through Thursday, remaining close to seasonal averages.
