EU energy crisis plan unveiled by Commission
The EU energy crisis plan has been presented by the European Commission, aiming to coordinate fuel supplies and prevent shortages of jet fuel and diesel amid escalating tensions linked to the Iran war.
The package, known as AccelerateEU, focuses on managing immediate risks while accelerating the transition towards clean energy across the bloc.
A key pillar of the EU energy crisis plan is coordination among member states on fuel supplies, particularly gas storage, oil stock releases and emergency national measures.
The Commission said ensuring stable access to jet fuel and diesel is a top priority as disruptions linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz threaten global supply chains.
Push for clean energy transition
The EU energy crisis plan places strong emphasis on reducing reliance on fossil fuels by accelerating electrification, expanding energy grids and increasing the use of renewable energy.
Ursula von der Leyen said the strategy aims to provide both immediate relief and long-term resilience, stressing the need to boost Europe’s energy independence through clean, domestically produced energy.
Support measures and policy tools
The plan includes adjustments to state aid rules, mobilisation of private investment and increased EU-level funding to support energy projects.
It also provides non-binding recommendations to member states, including measures to reduce energy demand, such as limiting fuel consumption and improving efficiency in buildings.
The EU energy crisis plan does not introduce major changes to the Emissions Trading System at this stage, with a broader review expected in July.
However, the Commission said it will assist countries in using ETS revenues to support electrification, industrial decarbonisation and investments aimed at lowering electricity costs.
Balancing short-term crisis and long-term strategy
The plan reflects the EU’s attempt to balance immediate crisis management with structural reforms in the energy sector.
By combining supply coordination with a faster transition to clean energy, the EU energy crisis plan seeks to shield member states from future geopolitical shocks while maintaining energy security.
