Global climate pact signed by 170+ nations
On this day in 2016, more than 170 countries signed the historic Paris Agreement, a landmark global effort to tackle climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The agreement, adopted under the United Nations framework, aimed to limit global temperature rise and strengthen countries’ ability to deal with the impacts of climate change.
A turning point in climate action
The Paris Agreement 2016 represented one of the most significant international climate commitments ever made, bringing together developed and developing nations under a shared goal.
It sought to keep global warming well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, while pursuing efforts to limit the increase to 1.5°C. Countries also committed to regularly updating their climate action plans.
Agreement enters into force later that year
The treaty officially entered into force in November 2016, after enough countries ratified it to meet the required threshold.
Since then, the Paris Agreement 2016 has remained central to global climate policy, shaping national strategies and international cooperation on emissions reduction and sustainability.
