International conference on the Strait of Hormuz in Paris

Date:

A major international conference on Strait of Hormuz security is being held today in Paris, under a French initiative aimed at addressing growing risks to global shipping routes.

The meeting brings together senior leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Broad international participation

Around 30 additional countries are expected to take part remotely, representing regions across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America.

According to statements cited in French media, the initiative aims to build a coalition of states focused on ensuring maritime security without direct involvement in ongoing regional conflicts.

Discussions are expected to centre on safeguarding commercial shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy transport.

Officials and analysts say the initiative could include coordinated naval escorts for merchant vessels and enhanced maritime surveillance to stabilise insurance costs, which have risen significantly due to regional tensions.

Debate over feasibility and risks

Despite its ambitions, the Strait of Hormuz security initiative has drawn scepticism from analysts, who question whether participating countries are willing to commit naval assets to a volatile region.

Some experts argue that the coalition risks becoming largely symbolic, with limited operational capacity unless security conditions improve significantly. Others note that European countries may be reluctant to engage militarily without clear guarantees against escalation with regional powers.

Strategic and economic implications

Analysts also highlight the potential impact on global energy markets, warning that sustained instability could lead to long-term increases in shipping costs and energy prices.

Some suggest that even if stability is restored, new financial mechanisms or regional arrangements could emerge that reshape control and regulation of the waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz security talks underline growing international concern over maritime chokepoints and their role in global economic stability.
