No dates set for second round of US-Iran talks

Date:

US-Iran talks are on a potential second round of negotiations with Tehran have not yet been scheduled, according to a statement from a spokesperson of Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The process of talks between the US and Iran remains in flux, with officials confirming that no timeline has been agreed for a follow-up round of discussions between Washington and Tehran.

The talks are expected to include issues related to Iran’s nuclear programme, which remains one of the central points of contention between the two sides.

Limited progress but key disputes remain

A senior Iranian official said there has been some progress towards a possible agreement aimed at de-escalating tensions. However, he noted that significant differences remain between the two sides, particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear activities.

The US-Iran talks are still marked by deep disagreement, especially over uranium enrichment levels and the scope and duration of potential nuclear restrictions.

Pakistan role and regional diplomacy

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesperson said the issues were discussed during recent diplomatic contacts. Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, General Asim Munir, recently visited Tehran, a move which reportedly helped reduce differences on certain issues and raised expectations for renewed diplomatic engagement.

Key sticking points in negotiations

Despite some diplomatic momentum, major disagreements persist. The most contentious issues in the US-Iran talks include the future of highly enriched uranium and the duration of any nuclear limitations imposed on Iran.

According to Iranian officials, these remain unresolved core disputes preventing a breakthrough in negotiations.
