Love rivalry behind Larnaca attempted murder

Date:

A 22-year-old Greek Cypriot has been remanded in custody for six days in connection with the attempted murder of a 19-year-old, whom he allegedly struck with his car in the early hours of Easter Monday outside a nightclub in Larnaca. The victim is reportedly the former partner of the suspect’s current girlfriend.

The suspect faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, reckless and negligent acts, assault causing actual bodily harm, and malicious damage. According to police testimony, the incident appears to have been driven by a romantic rivalry.

The incident began at a nightclub near Larnaca Marina, where the suspect and the victim encountered each other and became involved in a confrontation. The 22-year-old, who was accompanied by others including his partner, was escorted out of the venue by security.

At around 3 a.m., the 19-year-old left the club with friends and discovered that the suspect was puncturing his car tires. As the victim approached his vehicle, the suspect allegedly got into his own car and drove toward him at speed, striking him with the front of the vehicle. The impact threw the victim onto the roof before he fell onto the road.

The suspect then fled the scene at speed. The victim was taken by friends to the Accident and Emergency Department of Larnaca General Hospital, where he was treated for head abrasions and a knee injury before being discharged.

The suspect was later located by members of the Criminal Investigation Department in Larnaca and arrested on the same day.
