Presidential call highlights solidarity
President Nikos Christodoulides spoke by phone on Thursday with Lebanese President Michel Aoun, expressing deep concern over indiscriminate Israeli attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure in Lebanon that have caused significant casualties.
In a statement, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis noted that President Christodoulides conveyed Cyprus’s full solidarity with the Lebanese government and people during these difficult times. He emphasised that there can be no justification for actions that cause widespread human suffering and risk further escalation in an already fragile region.
Ceasefire and diplomatic efforts
The Cypriot President highlighted that the current ceasefire should be used as an opportunity for broader de-escalation and for intensified diplomatic efforts aimed at long-term stability. He stressed the critical role of UNIFIL, underlining the need to fully respect its mandate and UN Security Council Resolution 1701, while ensuring the safety of peacekeeping forces at all times.
Respect for sovereignty and humanitarian assistance
President Christodoulides reiterated the necessity of respecting Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, calling for an immediate halt to hostilities by all sides. He also confirmed Cyprus’s readiness to provide humanitarian assistance and support Lebanese authorities in managing the crisis.
Cyprus’s ongoing support
The leaders discussed ways Cyprus can contribute to regional stability, particularly through its current EU Council Presidency. Cyprus has already provided €300,000 in humanitarian aid via CyprusAid to UNICEF Lebanon and WFP Lebanon, helping the population affected by the recent conflict.
President Christodoulides reaffirmed Cyprus’s commitment to supporting Lebanon in addressing urgent needs and expressed gratitude to UNICEF and WFP for their vital work on the ground.
