Trump says he’d seize Iran’s oil, but Americans want the war over

President discusses war and oil

U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters on April 6, 2026, at the White House Easter Egg Roll that he would like to “take” Iran’s oil, but has refrained due to American public opinion.

“If I had my choice, I’d keep the oil. But I also want to make the people of our country happy,” Trump said. He claimed the oil could generate significant revenue and suggested he would treat the Iranian people better than the current leadership.

Criticism of Americans and poll results

Trump described Americans who oppose the war as “foolish,” citing a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll showing three out of four Americans are against deploying ground troops in Iran. Over half of those surveyed said the conflict could affect their personal finances.

The president defended the military operation, now in its sixth week, emphasising the rapid destruction of Iranian targets in just 34 days.

Threats to Iran’s infrastructure

Trump reiterated threats to Iran’s civilian infrastructure if the country does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz by his Tuesday evening deadline.

“They don’t want to cry, as the expression goes, uncle. But they will. And if they don’t, they’ll have no bridges, they’ll have no power plants, they’ll have no anything,” he said. Trump also dismissed concerns about potential war crimes related to targeting civilian power plants, claiming nuclear weapons in the hands of Iran’s leadership constitute a greater violation.
