New desalination unit in Limassol port

Date:

The Cyprus Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment has announced the full operation of a new mobile desalination unit at Limassol Port, with a capacity of 10,000 cubic metres per day. The unit previously operated on a trial basis, completing all technical and quality checks, and now contributes to the national water balance.

Third unit operational in ongoing water plan

This is the third unit to enter full operation, following the Moni unit (15,000 m³/day) and Kissonerga unit (12,000 m³/day), which began operating in July 2025. These developments are part of Cyprus’s ongoing strategy to increase water supply resilience and ensure long-term water security.

Expansion of desalination capacity

With these new additions, the number of operational desalination units rises from five to eight. The Limassol unit will soon be joined by a unit in Garyllis, also 10,000 m³/day, bringing the total to nine. Further projects planned for 2026–2027 include:

  • Mobile unit in Episkopi – 15,000 m³/day
  • Mobile unit in Vasiliko – 20,000 m³/day
  • Mobile unit in Mazotos – 40,000 m³/day
  • Floating unit in Germasogeia – 20,000 m³/day

These projects are expected to add 157,000 m³/day, increasing overall system capacity by 66% when combined with the existing five permanent units (235,000 m³/day).

Increasing coverage and water resilience

Permanent desalination units previously met 70% of public water supply needs until 2023. By 2025, coverage rose to 75%, and currently stands at 80%. The ongoing and planned projects aim to reach near 100% coverage by early 2027, securing water supply for domestic use and preserving dam reserves for irrigation.

Integrated water strategy

Beyond infrastructure, authorities stress the importance of water awareness and controlling overconsumption. The broader strategy focuses on strengthening supply, managing demand, and enhancing the resilience of Cyprus’s water system.
