United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus has increased patrols in the buffer zone in Nicosia following a recent incident involving stone and firecracker throwing.

The incident occurred on Wednesday in a “non-military use” area along Markou Drakou Street, within the UN-controlled zone.

Immediate response and investigation

UNFICYP spokesperson Alim Siddiq said patrols were deployed immediately after the incident to assess the situation. Authorities were also notified, with police asked to take action as part of an ongoing investigation.

The peacekeeping force confirmed it has offered assistance to support inquiries into the events.

Strong condemnation of violence

UNFICYP condemned the incident, stressing that “acts of violence of this kind are unacceptable” and pose a risk to public safety and stability.

The mission also contacted relevant authorities on both sides of the island to help establish the facts through a thorough investigation.

Call for restraint and respect for law

The UN force urged all parties to exercise restraint and respect the rule of law to avoid undermining peace and security in Cyprus.

The incident highlights ongoing sensitivities within the buffer zone, where even minor disturbances can raise broader concerns about stability on the island.
