Financial aid to stabilise pig farming sector
The Cypriot Council of Ministers approved a support plan for pig farming (fattening pigs) to mitigate the impacts of foot-and-mouth disease. The plan provides financial aid of up to €340,000, as announced by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment.
The initiative targets the challenges caused by restrictive measures for foot-and-mouth disease, which disrupted the sale of animal products, particularly in the pig farming sector.
Aid details and eligibility
The scheme, managed by the Department of Agriculture, offers up to €54 per fattening pig sent for slaughter, with a maximum of €50,000 per beneficiary. Overall funding will not exceed €340,000, covered by the Department’s budget.
Eligible applicants include individuals or legal entities who own or manage registered pig farms and participate in the annual Pig Farming Survey. Applications are open at District Agricultural Offices and will remain open until 2 April 2026.
Goals of the support plan
The plan aims to:
- Provide immediate liquidity support to pig farmers.
- Maintain farm viability despite market disruptions.
- Ensure the distribution of domestic production.
- Gradually stabilise the market affected by restrictions.
The aid complies with the EU de minimis framework, ensuring conformity with European Union state aid rules.
The Ministry confirmed that relevant services will continue monitoring the situation and implement additional interventions as needed to support the sector.
