Entrepreneurs call for reevaluation of regulations on Makariou Ave

Date:

The entrepreneurs’ initiative “Nicosia – Capital of Cyprus” has requested a reevaluation of traffic regulations on Archbishop Makarios III Avenue. The request was outlined in a letter sent to Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos on 15 November 2024. The aim, as stated in the letter, is to enhance vehicle accessibility to the closed section of Makariou Avenue, and, by extension, to boost visitor traffic.

The letter notes that the initiative’s Board of Directors has held discussions with relevant authorities and the Cyprus Association of Transport Engineers. It highlights that “the discussions revealed potential measures that could be implemented to improve accessibility without compromising the primary goals and plans of the state. These measures would significantly help facilitate visitors’ access to Makariou Avenue and nearby parking areas.”

“The members of the initiative – entrepreneurs of the Commercial Centre – remain optimistic about the future of Makariou Avenue. They are investing with sensitivity and love for the city’s centre, which is admittedly destabilised as current visitor numbers do not reflect its potential,” the letter states, urging the municipality to take action.

Finally, the letter emphasises that “traffic regulations are not a panacea for the challenges facing our city centre.” To make the area an attractive destination, it must enhance its image and identity by incorporating features common to modern cities. These include promoting entrepreneurship, green policies, cultural activities, and, most importantly, aesthetic and artistic upgrades. The letter concludes by calling on the state to address these needs.
