British bases request to expropriate land for antenna installation

340 plots sought for 32 antennas

The British bases in Cyprus have submitted a request to expropriate 340 plots of land to install 32 antennas, according to state media. The request has already been forwarded to the relevant Committee, amid government efforts to renegotiate the bases’ status.

President of the Republic stated that the matter, along with other issues, will be part of comprehensive discussions with the British authorities.

Local authorities protest

Local authorities have reacted strongly. The Mayor of Kourion said the municipality will pursue legal action to halt the project and has requested updated epidemiological data from the Ministry of Health for the surrounding area.

The Ecologists’ Movement condemned the plan as “another display of colonial arbitrariness” that endangers residents’ health and the environment. They accused the British of ignoring local authorities and citizen sentiment, urging the government to take a proactive role.

Government urged to act

The Movement called on the Christodoulides administration to stop acting as a passive observer and ensure local voices are heard in decisions affecting public health and the environment.
