Le Drian warns US ground forces could worsen Middle East crisis

Date:

US-Iran tensions at a critical juncture

Former French Foreign and Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, now President Macron’s envoy to Lebanon, warned that deploying US ground forces in Iran could further escalate the Middle East crisis. Speaking on French television, he described the current situation as a deadlock, with Tehran rejecting US ultimatums and Washington not accepting Iranian proposals.

Strait of Hormuz and military escalation

Le Drian noted that the crisis intensified after Iran blocked the Strait of Hormuz. He highlighted ongoing consultations between Washington and Tehran, stressing that President Donald Trump seeks a resolution but that Iran may require a ceasefire before entering negotiations.

The former minister also warned of potential regional escalation, citing the possibility of Houthi forces in Yemen blocking shipping in the Red Sea.

Israel’s role and regional dynamics

Le Drian pointed out that Israel seeks regime change in Iran, which does not necessarily align with US objectives. He added, however, that Israel would not continue a conflict against Iran alone. The French official also condemned Israeli actions in Lebanon and emphasised the importance of dialogue between the parties.

Ukraine remains a priority for Europe

On Ukraine, Le Drian stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin has not achieved his objectives and that Europe must continue supporting Kyiv amid the ongoing conflict.
