Steps taken by the Commission to appoint a new EU envoy

Date:

The European Commission has begun the necessary steps to appoint a new EU envoy in Cyprus, following the resignation of Johannes Hahn, the current Special Representative for the Cyprus issue.

Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis told CNA on Monday that Hahn has informed the President of the Republic of his intention to step down after being appointed President of Austria’s Central Bank.

Hahn expresses regret over resignation

In a letter to the President, Hahn expressed regret for leaving the post, emphasising the importance of resolving the Cyprus issue. He highlighted the mission’s significance for improving the daily lives of Cypriots, implementing EU policies effectively, and ensuring stability and security in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Hahn also noted that his new responsibilities would limit his availability, preventing him from continuing to fulfil the role at the required level.

Commission to appoint new envoy

According to Letymbiotis, the matter was also discussed during the recent meeting between the President of the Republic and the European Commission President in Brussels last week.

“The European Commission is already taking the necessary steps to appoint a new Special Representative for the Cyprus issue in the immediate future,” he said.
