Cuba hit by national power outage for second time this week

Cuba has suffered a major power outage, with more than 10 million people losing electricity after the national electrical grid collapsed for the second time in a week. Officials confirmed the disconnection and said recovery efforts are underway, prioritising hospitals, water systems, and other vital services.

Chronic energy shortages fuel crisis

The Caribbean nation has faced multiple blackouts this month due to ageing infrastructure and chronic fuel shortages worsened by a US fuel blockade. Authorities reported that approximately half of Havana had electricity restored by Sunday afternoon, but many areas remain without power.

Public unrest amid blackouts

The repeated outages have sparked rare public protests, including demonstrations in Havana and Morón. Some residents expressed frustration at long-term economic and social hardships, highlighting ongoing energy and political challenges.

Cuba prepares for potential tensions

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said the country has plans to protect citizens against any external military threats, while the government continues talks with the US to ease the fuel shortage crisis. The situation remains tense as power restoration continues.
