Yellow warning issued for heavy rainfall
A yellow weather warning has been issued as a low-pressure system affects the island, bringing periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms. The warning will be in force from 11 a.m.
According to the Meteorological Service, isolated but intense storms are expected, with rainfall rates ranging between 35 and 55 millimetres per hour.
Hail is also likely during thunderstorms, while winds will be variable and at times strong.
Unstable conditions expected across the island
Today, the weather will be partly cloudy at times, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms. Hail is expected in storm areas, while dust will be present in the atmosphere but is set to clear by the evening.
Winds will initially blow mainly from the northeast, light to moderate, and locally moderate to strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort. Later in the afternoon, they will shift to mainly northwesterly at similar strength. The sea will be slightly rough to rough.
Temperatures will rise to around 19°C inland, 20°C along the coast and 9°C in the higher mountains.
Showers and storms to continue overnight
Tonight, conditions will remain partly cloudy, with isolated showers or thunderstorms expected, mainly in western and northern coastal areas.
Winds will be mainly westerly to northwesterly, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort and locally strong at 5 Beaufort in windward areas. The sea will be slightly rough to rough, becoming rough later in exposed areas.
Temperatures will drop to 9°C inland, around 10°C in the south and east coasts, 13°C in the west and north, and 3°C in the higher mountains, where frost is expected to form locally.
Weekend brings more rain and possible snow
On Friday and over the weekend, periods of local rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected to continue. Hail remains possible during storms, while snowfall or sleet is expected on the highest peaks of Troodos.
Temperatures will gradually fall until Saturday, dropping below seasonal averages, before a slight rise is expected on Sunday.
