Law Office orders prosecution

The Law Office has instructed criminal prosecution following the completion of investigative work regarding suspended Paphos Mayor, Phedonas Phedonos, in connection with an alleged rape case. The mayor faces charges of rape and indecent assault, with the alleged incidents dating back to 2014.

Case preparation and court proceedings

The case file has been returned to the police for preparation of the indictment. Following this, a decision will be made whether the case will be lodged at the Paphos District Court or the Assize Court. Given the nature of the allegations, proceedings are expected to begin at the District Court before potentially moving to the Assize Court.

Investigation and evidence

The file was initially submitted to the Law Office on 26 February 2026 for review and was returned with instructions for further investigation. It has now been reassessed, with sufficient evidence deemed available to bring the case before the courts, based on complaints from a businessman and the alleged victim.

Presumption of innocence

It is emphasised that guilt or innocence will be determined by the Court, and the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.
