Vehicle license extension proposed until March 31

Date:

An urgent bill will be submitted to the House plenary on Thursday afternoon, approved by the Parliamentary Committee on Transport, Communications and Works, to extend the vehicle license renewal deadline until 31 March 2026. This was announced by Committee Chairman and DIKO MP Alekos Tryfonides following yesterday’s session.

Technical issues spark extension

Tryfonides explained that on the final day of the original renewal period, the Transport Department’s electronic platform experienced serious problems, preventing many citizens from completing the process. Hundreds of complaints were received by both the Committee and the Ministry as a result.

Immediate actions by authorities

Coordination with Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis aimed to draft an urgent bill to extend the renewal period. On Thursday morning, the necessary steps were taken in collaboration with the Transport Department and the Ministry, with the bill expected to be submitted urgently to the House plenary in the afternoon.

Retroactive provision included

The bill will include a retroactive provision from 11 March 2026, the original deadline, allowing the Transport Department to refund citizens who renewed their licenses between 12 March and the publication of the new law, including fines and additional charges. Tryfonides emphasised that the measure addresses the system issues and aims to benefit citizens.

Looking ahead, he expressed optimism that the installation of a new system in November will prevent similar problems in the future.
