Toby Gorman, president of Universal Television Alternative Studio, previously told The Hollywood Reporter that selecting Tom Hanks as narrator was an obvious choice.

Gorman said that they were thinking who the American equivalent of the BBC’s wildlife documentary legend, David Attenborough is, internally, they agreed there was a list of one: Tom Hanks; what they didn’t know was if he would agree to do it, but he loved it.

Each hour-long episode will focus on a different region of the Americas, including the Atlantic coasts, Mexico, the Wild West, the Amazon, the Gulf Coast, the Andes, the Caribbean, and the Pacific coast.

The production team behind the episodes told THR they conducted 180 expeditions across more than 8,700 miles of terrain to deliver the series. According to Gorman, it is the most expensive unscripted project in NBC’s history.
