Cyprus tops EU in citizens not using public transport

Cyprus recorded the highest proportion of citizens not using public transport in the European Union in 2024, Eurostat reported on Wednesday.

According to Eurostat, 85% of people aged over 16 in Cyprus stated that they do not use public transport at all. Other countries with high non-use rates include Italy (68.0%), Portugal (67.8%), France (65.1%), Slovenia (61.6%) and Greece (61.3%). In contrast, the lowest rates were recorded in Luxembourg (15.7%), Estonia (26.6%) and Sweden (26.7%).

Public transport usage in Cyprus

The Eurostat data shows that in Cyprus, 4.5% of those over 16 use public transport daily, 4.3% weekly, 2.9% monthly, and 3.3% less than once a month. Across the EU, 10.7% used public transport daily, 11.6% weekly, 10.0% monthly, and 17.1% less than once a month, while 50.6% reported never using it.

Weekly use highest in Luxembourg

Regarding weekly usage, the highest share was in Luxembourg (23.1%), followed by Latvia (19.2%) and Estonia (18.2%).
