UN appeals for permanent ceasefire in Lebanon, Israel, and Gaza

Date:

The United Nations reiterated on Tuesday its call for a “permanent ceasefire” in Lebanon, Israel, and Gaza, ahead of an anticipated ceasefire announcement.

“The only way to end the suffering of people on all sides is a permanent and immediate ceasefire on all fronts in Lebanon, Israel, and Gaza,” said Jeremy Laurence, spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, speaking to reporters in Geneva.

New strikes targeted the southern suburbs of Beirut, a stronghold of the Lebanese Hezbollah organization, this morning following an order by the Israeli military for residents of three buildings and the surrounding area to evacuate, according to footage from AFP TV.

The strikes occurred as Israel’s security council is expected to decide today on a ceasefire following two months of war against the pro-Iranian Hezbollah.

Israel has demanded the effective implementation by the UN of any potential ceasefire agreement with Lebanon and warned it will show “zero tolerance” for any violations, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated.
